Concrete Slabs & Flatwork
Level, properly reinforced concrete slabs for garages, sheds, workshops, and commercial applications.

What Is Concrete Flatwork
Flatwork is any concrete surface that is poured horizontally and finished level. This includes garage floors, shed pads, workshop floors, equipment pads, and commercial slabs. Flatwork might not be as visible as a front walkway or patio, but it needs to be just as well-built. A garage floor that cracks and settles will damage your vehicles and make the space difficult to use. A commercial slab that fails can shut down your business.
At NorthWay Muskegon Concrete, we pour slabs and flatwork that meet the demands of heavy use. Whether you need a simple shed pad or a large commercial floor, we have the experience and equipment to get the job done right.
How We Build Strong, Level Slabs
Every slab project starts with understanding what you need the surface to do. A shed pad is different from a garage floor, and a commercial warehouse slab has different requirements than a residential patio. Here is our process:
Site Assessment and Preparation
We evaluate your site to understand soil conditions, drainage needs, and any potential issues. Then we excavate to the correct depth and install a compacted gravel base. For heavy-use areas like garage floors and equipment pads, we may install a thicker base and use additional reinforcement.
Proper Thickness and Reinforcement
Slab thickness depends on what you plan to put on it. A shed pad might be 4 inches thick, while a garage floor or commercial slab typically needs 5 to 6 inches. We use rebar or wire mesh to reinforce the concrete and prevent cracking. For heavy equipment or vehicle storage, we may recommend thicker concrete or additional steel reinforcement.
Quality Concrete Mix
We use concrete mixes appropriate for the application. Most slabs use 3,500 to 4,000 PSI concrete. For commercial applications or areas with heavy loads, we can use higher-strength mixes. We also ensure proper air entrainment for freeze-thaw resistance.
Level Finish and Control Joints
We finish slabs level and smooth, with a slight slope if needed for drainage. Control joints are cut at regular intervals to manage cracking. For garage floors and commercial slabs, we can provide a smooth trowel finish or a broom finish for traction.
Types of Slabs and Flatwork We Install
We handle all types of concrete slab projects for residential and commercial customers:
- Garage floors for residential and commercial garages
- Shed pads and storage building foundations
- Workshop and pole barn floors
- Equipment pads for HVAC units, generators, and machinery
- Commercial warehouse and retail floors
- Agricultural slabs for barns and equipment storage
- RV and boat parking pads
Why Quality Matters for Slabs
A slab might seem simple, but cutting corners leads to problems. If the base is not properly compacted, the slab will settle unevenly. If reinforcement is skipped, cracks will spread and widen. If the concrete is too thin or mixed incorrectly, it will not hold up to use.
We have seen too many failed slabs that need to be torn out and replaced after just a few years. That costs more in the long run than doing it right the first time. When you hire us, you get a slab that is built to last. We do not rush through jobs or skip steps. Every project gets the same attention to detail, whether it is a small shed pad or a large commercial floor.
